Chairs

Since 1990 I have made sculpted objects that comfortably support the human body. I begin by cutting plywood and solid wood pieces. I stack laminate them to create the rough form. I carefully carve, grind, and sand the seat and back to fit the contours of a human figure. I then shape the outside of the chair, often making design decisions as I go. For strength, I use screws and glue to reinforce each layer. The parallel lines of the plywood create a strong design element as they define the curved surfaces of the chair. The strata of the plies also create a visual texture that contrasts with the grain of the solid wood areas.
